History
Before World War II, the Solomon Islands were controlled by Britain. In 1942, Japan moved onto the islands to build airfields. This threatened the path between America and Australia.
American and Allied forces arrived to take the islands back. The fighting here was very intense and lasted for several months. Many ships and planes were lost in the waters nearby.
After the war, the islands stayed under British rule for a while. The country eventually became fully independent in 1978 and is now a peaceful nation.
