Medals & Awards

History
The Cross of the Solomon Islands was instituted under the royal regulations of 1981 and 1982 to serve as the second-highest honour in the country. It was created to honour exceptional courage and conspicuous service by Solomon Islanders and international partners. Before independence, local police and defense scouts relied on British medals such as the George Cross or British Empire medals.
The medal holds a very high ranking, placed in court precedence above a British Knight Commander. Strict rules were made to keep it rare and special: no more than ten can be given out at one time, and only fifty living people may hold the award at once. It can be awarded for both civilian bravery and disciplined force operations.
