Medals & Awards

History
Created by royal warrant in 1981 and enacted in 1982, the Solomon Islands Medal is the third-highest tier in the national honours system. It was designed to replace earlier colonial distinctions by providing a uniquely national way to honor leaders and uniformed members who performed outstanding duty. The medal has two separate divisions: one for members of the disciplined forces and one for civilians.
To keep the award prestigious, authorities set an annual cap of no more than forty medals awarded in a single year, with a maximum cap of two hundred living members. Uniformed police and maritime surveillance personnel have received it for stabilizing the country during major crises and internal peacekeeping missions.
