History
During World War II, the Solomon Islands were the site of fierce fighting between Japan and the Allies. Local islanders, called coastwatchers, helped spot enemy ships and planes. Some joined small defense units to support Allied troops. Their knowledge of the islands and the sea helped the Allies win key battles like Guadalcanal.
