History
The Solomon Islands Police Bravery Medal was established to provide the national police force with a direct gallantry award for hazardous law enforcement and rescue duties. Because the islands do not maintain a traditional military army, police officers perform critical national defense, maritime patrol, and counter-insurgency functions.
The award became particularly prominent during internal unrest between 1998 and 2003, known locally as 'the Ethnic Tensions' or 'the Troubles.' During this difficult conflict, armed militants threatened communities, and police officers risked their lives to protect innocent citizens, disarm combatants, and maintain law and order.
