History

Poland gained its independence after World War I. For twenty years, it worked to build a new nation, but it was located between two large and powerful neighbors, Germany and the Soviet Union.

In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, which triggered the start of World War II. The Polish military fought with courage, but they were overpowered. The country was soon divided between Germany and the Soviet Union.

Throughout the war, the Polish people suffered under brutal occupation. Many joined underground resistance groups to fight for their freedom. After the war ended in 1945, Poland faced decades of control by the Soviet Union until it became a free democracy again.
