History
King Stanislaw August Poniatowski created the Order of Virtuti Militari in 1792. It is one of the oldest military honors in the entire world. Poland lost its freedom for over a century, but revived the award in 1919 right after the country became independent again.
During World War II, Polish soldiers fought hard in Europe, and commanders gave out this medal for amazing acts of bravery. Both the Polish government in exile and the communist government in Warsaw gave out versions of it, though the communist medals removed the royal crown from the Polish eagle.
In 1992, after Poland became a free democracy, the classic design with the crowned eagle was fully brought back. Today, it remains Poland's supreme decoration for battlefield valor in war.
