History
The Cross of Merit with Swords was created on October 19, 1942, by the Polish Government in Exile in London. It was based on the earlier civilian Cross of Merit, but added crossed swords to show military danger. It recognized important acts of service where lives were at risk, but outside direct combat lines.
Thousands of Polish pilots, sailors, and underground fighters received it during World War II. It honored intelligence couriers, engineers, and support soldiers who faced torture or death from the enemy while doing their jobs.
After World War II, the communist government stopped using the version with swords. In 1992, modern Poland brought the medal back into law to honor courage in perilous situations.
