History
The Polish Legions were created in 1914. They were mostly made up of Polish soldiers fighting for the Austro-Hungarian Empire against Russia. Their main goal was to regain independence for Poland. Many soldiers were very proud to be fighting for their nation's future. The legions were led by Jozef Pilsudski, who became a famous leader. He believed that the fighting would lead to a free Poland. They took part in many tough battles on the Eastern Front. After some time, the soldiers decided they did not want to fight for Austria-Hungary anymore. Many soldiers refused to swear an oath to the Central Powers. This caused many of them to be arrested or sent to camps. Even though they had a hard time, the units stayed strong for their cause. By the end of World War I, Poland finally became a free country. The Polish Legions were a big part of the dream of a new nation. Their courage inspired many people who lived in Poland to keep working for freedom. They proved that Polish soldiers could fight for their own country's sake instead of serving other empires.
