History
In the early 20th century, the Philippines was a territory of the United States. When World War II began in the Pacific, Japan attacked the islands in 1941. This led to a major conflict between Japanese and American forces.
Many American and Filipino soldiers were forced to surrender after a long defense. They faced very hard times as prisoners of war. The Allied forces fought to liberate the islands starting in 1944.
General Douglas MacArthur famously returned to the Philippines to lead the fight. The country gained its independence from the United States shortly after the war in 1946.
