History
The Philippine Scouts were formed at the start of the 20th century. They were local men who worked alongside soldiers from the United States. They helped keep order and protected the Philippine islands.
These scouts were known for being very tough. Because they knew the land so well, they were excellent at scouting missions. They were part of the United States Army and followed American military traditions.
When World War II started, the Scouts fought alongside American troops against invading forces. They took part in the difficult defense of the Bataan Peninsula. They fought with great courage against very strong opposition.
Many of these soldiers were taken as prisoners of war after their lines collapsed. After the war, some continued to serve, but the group was eventually disbanded as the Philippines became an independent nation.
