History

The Philippine Defense Medal was created in December 1944 by the Commonwealth Government in exile under President Sergio Osmeña. It was meant to honor both Filipino and American soldiers who resisted the overwhelming Japanese invasion between December 1941 and June 1942.

Troops who endured the grueling battles of Bataan and Corregidor were recognized with this decoration. After the war ended, surviving veterans received the medal as a symbol of early defiance against Axis forces in the Pacific.
