History

During the Cold War, Iran expanded its navy to secure regional shipping routes. The United States transferred decommissioned Allen M. Sumner-class destroyers to Iran in the early 1970s, where they were renamed the Babar class.

These warships carried heavy five-inch guns, depth charges, and radar systems. They patrolled vital sea chokepoints in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea to ensure open maritime transit throughout the tense geopolitical climate of the Cold War.
