History
The Azerbaijan Campaign Medal was established in 1946 following the end of the Azerbaijan Crisis. At the close of World War II, Soviet forces occupied northern Iran and backed separatist governments, creating a major international standoff.
After diplomatic pressure led to Soviet withdrawal, the Iranian army marched into Tabriz and re-established central authority. The Shah created this medal to thank all troops who participated in the operation.
The medal featured depictions of national victory and was awarded across all army units involved. It serves as an important record of Iran's early Cold War military history.
