The Thompson Submachine Gun of Solomon Islands

History

Nicknamed the Tommy Gun, this submachine gun fired heavy .45-caliber pistol rounds at very high speeds. When American and Allied forces landed in the Pacific during World War II, they shared arms with trusted local fighters. Solomon Island scouts attached to Allied units frequently carried these submachine guns into combat.

In thick jungle battles on islands like Guadalcanal and New Georgia, opposing patrols often bumped into each other at very close distances. In those sudden, chaotic moments, long rifles were hard to swing quickly. The Thompson allowed scouts to unleash an intense wall of fire instantly.

Famous scouts, including local heroes like Jacob Vouza, operated alongside Allied marine and commando teams. The rapid firepower of the Thompson helped these small teams survive against larger enemy patrols during dangerous night ambushes and deep intelligence missions.
