The RPG-7 of North Vietnam

History

The RPG-7 was introduced by the Soviet Union in the early 1960s as an easy-to-use anti-tank weapon for ordinary foot soldiers. North Vietnam received huge shipments from the Soviet Union and China, where it was copied as the Type 69.

A single soldier could carry the steel tube launcher on their back while an assistant carried spare rocket charges in a backpack. The launcher fired an explosive shape-charge rocket that could punch through thick vehicle steel or blast through concrete bunkers.

North Vietnamese troops used the RPG-7 to ambush armored columns on narrow dirt roads and to attack low-hovering helicopters. It gave small squads enough explosive punch to challenge heavily armored units.
