History
In 1947, the North Vietnamese government established the Order of the Resistance to honor people who served faithfully in the long struggle against French forces. It was designed to acknowledge both combat troops and civilians who contributed supplies, weapons, and shelter.
The order had three distinct classes based on the number of years served and the importance of the tasks completed. When the war against the United States escalated, the system expanded to honor long service during the new conflict.
By the end of the wars, hundreds of thousands of people received this order or its companion medal. It became a proud badge worn by generations of wartime veterans across the country.
