History

The Soviet Union designed the P-4 motor torpedo boat, known as Project 123, to guard shorelines and strike enemy shipping. It had an aluminum hull, powerful diesel engines, and could reach very high speeds across calm waters.

North Vietnam operated a small squadron of P-4 boats in the Gulf of Tonkin to guard its ports. In August 1964, North Vietnamese P-4 torpedo boats attacked an American destroyer during the Gulf of Tonkin incident, an event that directly led to major United States military escalation in the Vietnam War.

Though easily damaged by air strikes and heavy naval artillery, these boats were extremely fast and could launch heavy underwater torpedoes before speeding back into coastal coves and bays.
