History

Saudi Arabia purchased American Hawk missile systems during the Cold War to shield cities, military bases, and oil facilities from air attack. The batteries provided a mobile defense network.

During the Gulf War, Saudi Hawk units were on high alert against Iraqi aircraft and cruise missiles. Their presence kept coalition airbases and ports safe from sudden aerial raids.

The Hawk system served as the Kingdom's primary medium-range air defense umbrella until newer Patriot missile batteries were widely deployed.
