History
The Order of King Abdulaziz was officially established by King Faisal in March 1971. It was named in honor of King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founding monarch who unified the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Before this system was formalized, high honors were given as special royal gifts and royal decrees.
The order was created to give the Kingdom a modern and standardized honours system. It recognizes exceptional civilian contributions, acts of extreme battlefield courage, and supreme military leadership. Over several decades, the rules were refined, including major updates under national honours legislation.
Today, the order features several classes, ranging from collar and grand cordon grades for heads of state and top generals to lower classes for dedicated officers and soldiers. It has been conferred during major regional crises, including the 1991 Gulf War.
