History
The Lewis gun was originally developed during World War I and remained an important defensive weapon through World War II. In Singapore, local volunteer forces and coastal defense battalions set up these air-cooled machine guns to guard beaches, airstrips, and city roads.
The gun featured a distinct barrel cooling shroud and a top-mounted circular drum. Volunteer soldiers trained extensively on the Lewis gun to fight incoming Japanese aircraft and landing troops during the February 1942 campaign before the island fortress fell.
