History

The Pingat Gagah Berani, or Medal of Valor, was instituted in 1962 alongside Singapore's original set of state decorations. It was established to honor extraordinary courage displayed by servicemen during acts of active duty.

The medal was famously awarded to soldiers and police officers who fought during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation in the 1960s. Over the decades, it has remained one of Singapore's rarest military decorations, reserved strictly for bravery under direct enemy fire.
