What is the Bronze Star version of this medal?

This special version is given to soldiers who face enemy fire or other serious dangers while working abroad. It adds a small bronze star symbol to the medal to show bravery. This honors those who kept doing their jobs even when things became very risky.

Did Singaporean troops earn this in the Persian Gulf?

Yes, they did. Singapore sent troops to help international teams during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Because they worked far from home on these tough missions, they earned this award.

How long must a soldier deploy to qualify?

The rules depend on the type of mission. A soldier might only need to spend 96 hours on a combat mission to qualify. For other support jobs that are less dangerous, they usually need to work for at least 30 days.

Can sailors and airmen earn it?

Yes, all branches of the military can earn this. It is not just for soldiers on land. Navy sailors on ships and Air Force crews who fly missions are also eligible if they serve overseas.

Can multiple deployments be recognized?

Yes, soldiers can earn more than one award. If a person goes on many different trips to help, they can get extra bars for their medal. This shows that the soldier has helped out many times in different parts of the world.

History

The Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Service Medal was created to recognize troops deployed abroad as Singapore took on larger global security roles. It was instituted following increasing participation in international peace and security coalitions in the late 20th century.

Servicemen deployed on missions such as international counter-piracy patrols, reconstruction in Afghanistan, and United Nations peacekeeping earned this medal. Service under direct hostile fire qualifies personnel for a Bronze Star device worn on the medal.
