The K-50M of North Vietnam

History

During the early years of the war, North Vietnam needed small, light automatic weapons for its fighters. Technicians took Chinese Type 50 submachine guns and rebuilt them inside local workshops into a new gun named the K-50M.

The gunsmiths shortened the barrel jacket, added a pistol grip, and replaced the bulky wooden stock with a sliding wire stock copied from French weapons. These changes made the submachine gun shorter, lighter, and easier to hide beneath loose clothing or inside thick jungle brush.

The K-50M fired pistol ammunition from large drum or curved stick magazines. It became a famous example of North Vietnamese industry adapting foreign weapons to suit jungle guerrilla warfare.
