History

In the mid-1930s, the Royal Thai Air Force purchased Hawk III biplane fighters from the United States. Thai military factories also obtained permission to assemble extra airframes locally in Bangkok. It was loved by pilots for its great agility.

When World War II broke out in the region, the Hawk III was Thailand's main fighter plane. Thai pilots flew combat patrols and ground-attack missions against enemy forces during border battles and air raids. They even engaged faster, more modern monoplanes in dogfights.

Even though military aviation developed quickly, the Hawk III soldiered on through the conflict. Today, the world's only surviving Hawk III aircraft is carefully preserved in a museum in Bangkok.
