History

The BTR-60 was developed by the Soviet Union to carry infantry soldiers while shielding them from machine guns and shell fragments. It had eight large driven wheels and a boat-like body that allowed it to swim across rivers and lakes.

North Vietnam received batches of BTR-60 vehicles to support mechanized infantry battalions. The vehicle could quickly drive along muddy roads or cross wide waterways without waiting for bridge construction.

During late-war campaigns, BTR-60s worked closely with tanks to push forward quickly. They provided heavy infantry support and protected soldiers as they advanced toward key enemy positions.
