History
When Singapore became an independent country in 1965, it had to build an armed defense very quickly. In 1968, Singapore secretly bought second-hand French AMX-13 light tanks from Israel. These vehicles surprised the public when they rolled out in the 1969 National Day Parade.
The tank featured a lightweight frame and an unusual two-part oscillating turret. Local Singaporean engineers later upgraded the fleet into the AMX-13 SM1 with modern diesel engines, updated tracks, and better targeting computers to defend the nation throughout the Cold War era.
