History
During the Cold War, Romania was a member of the Warsaw Pact but pursued independent military manufacturing policies under Nicolae Ceaușescu. Romanian engineers decided to design an indigenous tank rather than rely solely on Soviet factories. Building upon the chassis and layout of the Soviet T-55, they created the TR-85.
The TR-85 featured a lengthened hull with six road wheels on each side, a German-designed diesel engine, and Romanian fire-control equipment. Produced in large numbers starting in the late 1970s and 1980s, the TR-85 served as the main striking force of Romanian armored divisions. Modernized versions known as the TR-85M1 Bizonul remain in active service with Romania's army today.
