History
King Ferdinand I established this campaign award in July 1918 as World War I was concluding. It was designed to recognize every soldier and officer who had joined the fierce battles to defend Romania and unify its historical lands.
The medal was awarded to hundreds of thousands of combatants and medical workers. Soldiers could attach metal bars to the ribbon showing specific battles they survived, such as Marasti, Marasesti, or Carpathians. When Romania entered the communist era, the medal was no longer worn, but it remains a prized family heirloom across the country.
