History
The Communist government of Romania created the Order of Tudor Vladimirescu in June 1966. It was named after a 19th-century hero who led a revolt against foreign oppressors, whom the party viewed as a symbol of people's freedom.
The medal had five classes and was awarded to high-ranking army officers, police chiefs, and politicians who strengthened national defense. When the communist dictatorship was overthrown during the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the medal was permanently canceled and replaced by traditional honors.
