History
Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza first conceived the Military Virtue Medal in 1860, and King Carol I officially established it in 1872. It became the enlisted soldier's equivalent to the highest officer awards, letting everyday troops be recognized for courage under enemy fire.
During World War I and World War II, thousands of Romanian soldiers received this medal for standing brave in trenches and tough battles. When the monarchy ended in 1947, the medal was suspended. The modern republic brought it back in 2000 to reward soldiers who perform brave acts in domestic defense or foreign peacekeeping missions.
