History
During the heavy fighting on the Eastern Front in World War II, the Romanian Army faced large numbers of well-armored Soviet tanks like the T-34. Romania lacked the industrial base to build brand-new medium tanks quickly, so Romanian engineers came up with a creative solution. They took captured Soviet T-60 light tanks and removed their original turrets.
In place of the turret, they mounted captured Soviet 76.2 mm field guns behind three-sided armored shields made from salvaged armor plate. A total of thirty-four vehicles were converted by the Leonida workshops in Bucharest. The TACAM T-60 served with Romanian armored units during defensive operations in 1944 until the remaining vehicles were later confiscated by Soviet forces.
