History
During the Cold War, the Romanian military wanted a modern troop carrier to move soldiers safely alongside tanks. Romania acquired a production license from the Soviet Union for the BTR-60PB armored vehicle. However, Romanian engineers made several changes to match local factory components, resulting in the TAB-71.
The TAB-71 used two more powerful Romanian gasoline engines instead of the Soviet engines, improving its horsepower and cross-country mobility. The vehicle was fully amphibious and featured an enclosed turret with machine guns. Hundreds of TAB-71 carriers served throughout the Romanian Land Forces until updated models replaced them late in the Cold War.
