History
Ordered in the late 1920s to modernize Romania's Black Sea fleet, NMS Regele Ferdinand was built in Italy and entered service in 1930. Named after King Ferdinand I of Romania, it carried heavy naval artillery, torpedoes, and anti-submarine depth charges, serving alongside its sister ship Regina Maria.
During World War II, Regele Ferdinand escorted troop and supply convoys across the Black Sea, protected naval minelaying operations, and hunted Soviet submarines. In 1944, it played a key role during the evacuation of Axis troops from Crimea. After Romania switched sides, the ship was captured by the Soviet Navy, though it was later returned to Romania and served for years into the Cold War.
