History
In the early 1890s, the Kingdom of Romania adopted the Mannlicher Model 1893 as its primary military rifle. Designed and manufactured in Austria-Hungary by the Steyr factory, this bolt-action weapon fired a 6.5 mm cartridge from a five-round en-bloc clip. It quickly became the backbone of Romanian infantry firepower.
When Romania entered World War I in 1916 on the Allied side, the M1893 saw heavy action in defense of the Carpathian Mountains and during the retreat into Moldavia. Even after supply shortages forced Romanian units to take French weapons, the accurate and dependable Mannlicher remained beloved by Romanian soldiers and remained in second-line use during World War II.
