History
When Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975, its young defence force needed a modern and light battle rifle. The American-designed M16A1 was chosen as the primary rifle for PNG soldiers.
Its plastic stock and aluminum parts made it easy to carry through mountainous jungles and swamps where heavy loads slowed soldiers down. The rifle fired smaller, high-speed bullets with very little recoil.
The M16A1 became a symbol of the newly formed Papua New Guinea Defence Force and remained in frontline military service for decades.
