History
Papua New Guinea is made up of many beautiful islands. During the early 1900s, different parts of the territory were controlled by different nations, including Australia and Germany.
When World War II arrived in the Pacific in 1942, the islands became a main site of battle. Soldiers from many countries fought there because the land was close to important shipping routes in the ocean.
The local people often helped soldiers during the war, acting as guides or carrying supplies through the thick jungles and over high mountains. It was a very hard time for everyone who lived on the islands.
After the war, the country worked toward becoming its own independent nation. It finally gained its full independence in 1975. Today, it is a country that is proud of its unique culture and its important place in history.
