History
Instituted alongside the Orders of Papua New Guinea in 2005, the Distinguished Military Service Medal was designed specifically to recognize outstanding merit and leadership in the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF).
Prior to its establishment, military personnel were predominantly recognized through British Imperial military decorations such as the Military Cross or British Empire medals.
In modern service, it is reserved for commanders, senior officers, and soldiers whose extraordinary service directly benefits the country's national defense and sovereign missions.
