History
During the late 1930s, Romania wanted to produce its own modern military aircraft instead of buying all planes from foreign nations. Engineers at Industria Aeronautică Română (IAR) designed the IAR 80, a fast all-metal monoplane with a powerful radial engine and retractable landing gear. When it first flew in 1939, it matched many of the best fighter planes in Europe.
During World War II, Romanian pilots flew the IAR 80 on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. Its most famous mission occurred on August 1, 1943, during Operation Tidal Wave, when Romanian pilots intercepted American B-24 bombers attacking the Ploiești oil refineries. While newer Allied aircraft eventually outperformed it later in the war, the IAR 80 proved Romania's aerospace capability.
