History
After World War II, Germany was split into two parts. The western part was controlled by the U.S., Britain, and France. They helped it become a free and democratic country.
West Germany was located right next to the border of the Soviet-controlled East Germany. This made it the front line for the Cold War in Europe. Many people felt nervous about potential conflict between the two sides.
Despite the tension, West Germany worked hard to rebuild its cities and economy. It became a very wealthy and strong nation and joined alliances like NATO to keep itself safe from invasion.
In 1990, the wall that separated the two sides finally came down. West and East Germany reunited to become one country again. West Germany then ended as a separate nation, and the new, united Germany was born.
