History
Federal leaders created this official disaster decoration in 2002 after historic flooding devastated regions along the Elbe and Danube rivers. It followed a long West German tradition of calling on armed forces to provide emergency disaster relief.
Thousands of soldiers worked alongside civilian emergency crews to build sandbag dikes, evacuate towns, and rescue stranded families. The medal marked one of the largest domestic deployments of the military in peacetime history.
Similar disaster medals have been renewed during subsequent floods, serving as an important symbol of the military's mission to protect German citizens at home.
