History
In the early 1900s, Russia was a powerful empire. It joined World War I to help its allies, but the war caused many problems at home.
The Russian army fought hard against Germany and its partners, but they lost many soldiers. The stress of the war led to a revolution in 1917, and Russia pulled out of the fighting early.
After the revolution, Russia became part of the Soviet Union. It stayed that way for many years until the Soviet Union ended in 1991. Russia then became an independent country once again and remains a significant world power.
