History

The 226th Zemlyansky Regiment served in the Russian Army during the First World War. It was part of a larger division that fought against the German military. The men were mostly infantry soldiers.

This regiment gained fame at a place called Osowiec Fortress. When the enemy used poison gas against them, the soldiers did not give up. Even though they were badly hurt, they made a stand that surprised their enemies. This event is often called the Attack of the Dead Men.

The regiment continued to serve until the Russian Army started to fall apart due to the revolution at home. Many soldiers eventually returned home or joined new groups as the government in Russia changed. Its history remains a story of courage under very difficult conditions.
