Medals & Awards

History
The Medal of Suvorov was instituted on March 2, 1994, by presidential decree. It was named in honor of Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov, an 18th-century Russian commander who famously never lost a single battle in his entire career. The award was designed to recognize bravery specifically in ground forces.
The medal features a detailed bust portrait of Suvorov on the front, with crossed swords and a saber beneath his name on the reverse. It was handed out extensively to soldiers, paratroopers, and marines fighting in regional wars.
Over the years, the medal's statutes were adjusted to permit awards for outstanding leadership during large ground training exercises as well as real combat. It remains one of the primary marks of pride for Russian infantrymen.
