History
The Ottoman Empire was a vast land that existed for hundreds of years. It was once a very strong power that reached across three different continents. Its leaders were called Sultans, and they kept power for a long time.
By the early 1900s, the empire was getting weaker. Many people living inside its borders wanted to have their own countries. During World War I, the empire decided to join the side called the Central Powers to fight against the Allied nations.
World War I was very hard for the Ottoman Empire. The fighting caused many problems for the people living there. When the war ended in 1918, the empire fell apart because it had lost so much strength.
After the war, the land that was once the Ottoman Empire changed a lot. In 1923, the Republic of Turkey was formed from what was left of the empire. This marked the end of the old sultanate system and the start of a modern government.
