History
The Tripoli Medal, also known as the Trablusgarp Medal, was instituted in 1912 by Sultan Mehmed V. It was created to honor the Ottoman officers and troops who resisted the Italian invasion of Ottoman North Africa between 1911 and 1912.
The medal was awarded in silver and bronze versions. The front featured the sultan's tughra over battle banners and weapons, and the reverse side was inscribed with the location of the campaign in North Africa.
Many key military leaders of the later Turkish Republic, including Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, fought in this campaign and received the decoration. It became an important symbol of Ottoman resistance against European colonial expansion.
