History
New Zealand is an island nation located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The first people to live there were the Maori, who arrived hundreds of years ago and built a strong warrior culture. Later, British settlers arrived, and New Zealand became a part of the British Empire. Because of this close connection to Britain, the country built its armed forces to protect its home islands and to help its global partners in times of conflict.
During the twentieth century, New Zealand sent many troops to fight in major global wars. In World War I, New Zealand soldiers joined with Australian forces to form the famous ANZAC corps. They fought in the difficult Gallipoli campaign in Turkey and on the Western Front in Europe. When World War II started, New Zealand troops served in North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific. Pilots flew in the skies over Britain, and sailors guarded important sea routes. These soldiers earned a strong reputation for being brave, tough, and reliable on the battlefield.
After World War II, the Cold War began, and New Zealand continued to work with allies like the United States, Britain, and Australia. New Zealand sent ground troops, artillery units, and navy ships to help the United Nations during the Korean War. Years later, the nation also sent soldiers, engineers, and medical teams to serve in the Vietnam War. Through all of these modern conflicts, the small island nation showed that it was willing to play an active role in world events and military history.
