History
The New Zealand Gallantry Star was instituted by royal warrant in 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II. It was created as part of the country's push to build its own distinct honors system. It replaced older British second-level bravery medals, including the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry and the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
The medal sits just below the Victoria Cross for New Zealand in importance for wartime valour. It is awarded rarely, only when a service member shows outstanding bravery in situations of grave danger. By bringing these awards under New Zealand authority, the nation ensured Kiwi troops were recognized directly by their own sovereign and government.
