History
Instituted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007, the New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration was made specifically for military personnel. Before its creation, service members performing outstanding non-valour work had to be recognized through civilian orders like the New Zealand Order of Merit or older British decorations.
The decoration fills an important role by rewarding excellent service in leadership, training, and operational support. It can be given for distinguished service in dangerous combat theaters or for dedication in high-level defense roles during peacetime.
