History
Italy is a nation in Southern Europe with a long military history. It became a unified kingdom in the nineteenth century by bringing many smaller states together. During World War I, Italy joined the Allied nations to fight against Austria-Hungary and Germany. Italian soldiers fought hard battles along the snowy mountain borders. The war cost many lives and left the country weak and poor.
In the 1920s, a leader named Benito Mussolini created a strict Fascist government. He wanted to rebuild the old Roman Empire and took over lands in Africa. When World War II started, Italy became a major partner with Germany and Japan in the Axis powers. Italian forces fought in North Africa, Greece, and Russia. Later in the war, Allied forces invaded Italy, and the Italian people removed Mussolini from power. Italy then switched sides to help the Allies defeat Germany.
After World War II, Italy chose to become a democratic republic and rebuild its towns. It became a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, during the Cold War. Italy did not send combat troops to fight in the Korean War, but it did send a field hospital to help wounded people. It also did not fight in the Vietnam War. Today, Italy works with its international allies to protect peace and security around the world.
